Vi passer fortsatt godt på dyrene våre, selv om vi må holde stengte dører for publikum og bidra til å følge offentlig pålegg og anbefalinger.
On December 11, little Fiona moved into the Aquarium in Bergen! She is a two-year-old sea lion girl (born June 8, 2017), and comes from Karlsruhe Zoo in Germany. We look forward to getting to know Fiona. Visit her at the Aquarium this winter!
Here at Bergen Aquarium, Fiona will be staying with our two superstars Amy at 8 years and Kim at 19 years. How they fit together will be exciting to see, but there will probably be even more life in the sea lion pond now than before.
Earlier this fall, the Bergen Aquarium was contacted by the pedigree for California sea lions in EAZA. The inquiry concerned a two-year-old sea lion female from Karlsruhe Zoo in Germany who was ready to move to another park. We have long wanted a new sea lion for our group, and Fiona worked perfectly for us.
The Bergen Aquarium is both BALAI approved and a member of EAZA, which makes us eligible to receive her right away. Our sea lions official traveled down to the park in Germany and met Fiona in October to see if she would fit in with us.
Many believe that all sea lions are happy to be served any fish. Not Fiona! Like any diva, she is clear on what she likes and dislikes. Especially when it comes to food. She does not want solder, and spits it out with obvious dissatisfaction. Mackerel, on the other hand, is Fiona's favorite. She is very inventive when it comes to persuading her zookeepers to give her mackerel for all meals.
Fiona is a social being and has spent a lot of time with the other sea lions in the Karlsruhe Zoo. She is known for being a lively cheerleader, and loves to play with her one year younger brother. We look forward to getting to know her better.
How will Fiona interact with Amy and Kim? Do they like to live with each other? Will Fiona like herself in Bergen? And most importantly: Will she get enough mackerel? (Yes of course ;) )
