European flounder
Platichthys flesus
The European flounder is a common flatfish along the coast of Norway. It is often difficult to distinguish the flounder from the European plaice. The flounder is recognised by the many bony knobs along the lateral line, which are absent on the gill cover. The flounder is right-eyed - meaning the eyes are on the right side. However, around 30% of individuals are left-eyed. This makes them somewhat unusual within the flatfish family.
